Baby Shower History

The showering of love and gifts upon a new mum and baby is a concept that has been popular in many countries for centuries. It is believed that civilisations as ancient as the Egyptians celebrated a new birth by presenting hand-made gifts to the mother and child.

In the 1800’s Victorian ladies held tea parties for new mums and their babies. These always took place after the baby was born because pregnant ladies did not appear in public. Umbrellas later became symbolic because it was customary for these ladies to carry parasols. Almost all of the gifts were handmade except for the silver that was given to babies by their grandmothers.

The tradition has spanned the ages and been grasped whole-heartedly by the Americans. They celebrate pregnancy and birth to the full; and why not? It is an exhilarating and nerve wracking time; the perfect time for friends and family to show their support and share in all the excitement.

Now people in the UK are getting involved, including the proud dads. Whether through a baby shower or welcoming party, share your excitement with those around you and celebrate your baby!
